I strongly believe that Mind-Body exercise such as yoga has
profound effect in alerting our own programming at the deepest cellular level.
This core programming changes the way we experience our life. It changes our own
reality. It changes the way how we assign meaning to our experiences.
A year before, someone asked me a question, “What is that
one major benefit that you got from the practice of Yoga?” My answer was that Yoga
practices programmed me to become Self Aware which gave a clear understanding of
my strengths and weaknesses”. Let me try to explain my above answer further in
detail.
The Zones:
Comfort Zone:
Most of us we live in a comfort zone where things are known and familiar to us.
The brain is designed for us to live in this zone. It is a very well protected
zone and the sole function of the brain is also to protect us. Our activities
are routine by nature in this zone and hence we don’t experience varieties.
Most of us knowingly/unknowingly live in this zone where daily life is a routine.
So, this is a state of settlement or even I can call it a state of inertness, a
no-growth zone.
Discomfort Zones:
Areas in life which are not familiar to us. These areas give diversities.
Change is the basic fabric of life and hence our growth zone or even I can call
it a state of alertness. Since, things are unknown to us; we tend to develop fears,
worries and self-doubts when we explore ourselves here.
Threshold region:
This region is a gap between the comfort zone and discomfort zone. This is the
area in which one sees where the level of comfort diminishes and level of
discomfort ramps up. This is the meeting area of our strengths and weaknesses. My
experience is that with the practice of yoga, this area gets zoomed up to a new
higher dimension. I can call this area as awareness zone. The secret of yoga
practice is that it gives a vivid experience and high awareness level of my own
strengths & weaknesses in this region.
The correction: The
way I approach my life, I noticed a definite correction that transpired. Earlier, When I was given a new task (D) , I
approached that unknown task straightaway from (A) without knowing preciously
my resource capabilities and resource requirements to get the task D. Most of
the times, the end results were counterproductive. Either, I suffocated myself
with the new task or failed to achieve the task.
With Practice of yoga, something happened at the deeper
level which gave the vividness of B & D. With these in place, the corrected
approach to the new task has become A->B->C->D. The new approach has provided me the ability
to see distinctively my end of comfort level as well as the start of the
discomfort level. Remember, this is not an approach at my conscious level but
at my subconscious level. Yes, it is on autopilot mode and it has become part
of my habit. I feel that it is a great way to lead a life because growth by
definition has become our habit. Life is all about change & we seek for
change and the change is in the direction our growth. That is the power of yoga
in aiding us to move towards our growth path.
Over a period of time, with clear focus on the awareness zone,
the dimension of the comfort zone will increase. In other words, what was
uncomfortable at one point of time has become now comfortable.
In my personal experience, yoga has the ability to program
at the deeper subconscious level simply enhancing the threshold region which
sets the life in a strong growth path.
